reviews “Cheers Sports Fans!”

Guitarist/vocalist George McConnell doesn’t waste any time in letting you know that he and The Nonchalants mean business on Cheers Sports Fans! “Take Me to the Show” leads off with all the thunder of vintage Who at Leeds. From there, Cheers offers everything from moments of raggedy-ass Exile-style grittiness (“A Thousand Things”) to midnight gasoline shimmer (“Burn In Flames”) to bar-slamming swagger (“Kill The Man”) and wistful stagger (“Grinning Mischievously”). “Bay Of Scorn” has the acoustic-electric yin-yang of a cool old Grin tune, while “Black Mamba” is sheer grease. If John Sebastian and Taj Mahal spent an afternoon together hangin’ on the riverbank, then it would sound just like “Whistlin’ Fishin’ Blues.” And “Oldsmobile Blues” is one of those had-to-be-the-album-closer tunes à la the Stones’ “Moonlight Mile.” This is the sound of a talented man in a good place in life. Cheers to you, George. –Brian Robbins

George McConnell "Cheers Sports Fans" CD

George’s new album features some of the most important and well written songs of his career. “Bit of a Problem,” “Grinning Mischievously “ and “Burn in Flames” have already been important staples of The Nonchalant’s live show for the last year or so, while new songs such as “A Thousand Things” are sure to be an instant hit with George’s long time fans. The instrumental rocker “Black Mamba” will appeal to anyone and everyone who loves a  hard hittin’, well writtin’, kick ass rocknroll song. Would you believe George and company had the gall to rerecord the classic Beanland song “Take Me To The Show”?! Well, they did and this version is better than ever! But that’s not all: this compact disc also includes: “Whistlin’ Fishin’ Blues,” “Kill The Man,” “Oldsmobile Blues,” and “Bay of Scorn.”

The new CD was recorded, produced, and mastered by Winn McElroy at Black Wings Studio near Water Valley, Mississippi, and boy does it sound awesome! The artwork and photography was produced by Newt Rayburn at Rayburn Studios.

We can’t express to you adamantly enough how cool and killer George’s new album is! You have to order it, hold it, and hear it to believe it!!

Italian Fest

We’ll see ya in Memphis at Italian Fest this Thursday, May 31st! review of Singles Only

George McConnell’s Singles Only is just what it says: a collection of the singles the veteran guitarist has made available on his website as A- and B-sided “virtual 45s.” Of course, we dinosaurs who actually lived the days of the little black records with the big ol’ holes in the middle of them will remember that the b-sides were usually thought of as the weaker tracks that sometimes didn’t ever see the light of day on an album … but often turned out to be hidden treasures. As far as Singles Only goes, forget about the As and Bs – the good ones are good and that’s it.

Two Years of Rock

Winter of 2011 marks my new band’s two year anniversary!!! I’d like to thank all of our fans & music venues throughout the Southeast and beyond for a great run so far and all your support.

During this time, I’ve burned up thousands of road miles with my band The Nonchalants. The band features Tommy Turan on bass guitar, Max Williams on lap-steel, slide, and lead guitar, and Kenny Graeber on drums. If I haven’t told you before, I’m telling you now, this is the best band I’ve ever been in…..period!

We’ve headlined outdoor festivals, opened for major international artists, released one album, recorded a second album due out very soon, received some great reviews, killed a deer with our van, and rocked out with old and new fans alike.

What to look forward to in the year to come…..a new website, new merch, a new album, expanding our playing territory, writing new songs, world domination, and surviving being a father! (Oh yeah, did I mention I’m a new dad?!)

Cheers to all you fans out there! And don’t forget your bartenders……
